In early 1943, a new Tiger tank was commissioned, featuring a larger turret to accommodate the formidable 8.8cm L/71 gun. Its armor was enhanced for better battlefield survival, with frontal armor increased to 150mm and side armor remaining at 80mm. A wooden model showcasing its immense size debuted on October 20th, 1943, drawing immediate attention. Production started in November 1943, initially using Porsche turrets with curved front plates. On December 6th, the shot-trap issue was addressed by Henschel redesigning the turret and gun mantlet, reducing the frontal area and incorporating a bell-shaped mantlet. By March 1945, 489 Royal Tigers (King Tigers) were produced, mostly assigned to independent heavy tank detachments due to their size, weight, and maneuverability.
