The sumitsubo holds spiritual significance, historically left in shrines or temples as a cherished item. Today, it's often given to master carpenters, who may donate it to shrines. Used to mark wood for cutting, much like a Western chalk line, its deep well holds ink-soaked silk cotton. Drawing the line through picks up ink for marking.
