Biscuit medallion depicting the allegory 'The Day', based on Bertel Thorvaldsen's (1770-1844) marble work from 1815. Branded by the Eneret, Bing and Gröndahl (B&G) manufactory. Note: previously restored. Thorvaldsen, born in Copenhagen, was the son of an Icelandic sculptor and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts from 1781. He spent much of his career in Rome, gaining fame for his works inspired by ancient art. In 1815, he created the pair of marble medallions 'The Day' and 'The Night', both of which were highly successful. The manufactory: Eneret, Bing and Gröndahl. Frederik Vilhelm Grondahl, after completing his apprenticeship at the renowned Royal Manufactory in Copenhagen in 1833, became a designer and sculptor a few years later. In 1852, he was approached by the Bing brothers, Jacob Herman and Meyer Herman, two art and paper dealers from Copenhagen who wanted to establish a private porcelain factory, the first of its kind in the country. The Bing & Grondahl Porcelain Factory opened its doors in 1853. Around 1880, J.H. Bing's sons, Ludvig and Harald, took over the factory's leadership as general director and production manager, respectively. This medallion is from the early period of the manufactory (1853 to around 1885), when they marketed reproductions of Bertel Thorvaldsen's works.
