Spain’s flag consists of three horizontal stripes – a red stripe at both the top and bottom, with a yellow stripe (twice the width of the red) in the center. Toward the left and center in the yellow stripe is the nation’s coat of arms, which comprises a crowned shield, quartered (each quarter displays the badges of original Spanish kingdoms) and flanked by crowned pillars representing Gibraltar and Ceuta. Wrapped around the pillars is a red scroll with the motto “Plus Ultra,” which translates to “there is more beyond.” This flag was formally adopted in 1981 – however, there is also a Spanish civil flag which, while identical in format, does not display the coat of arms.
